How to Practise Blending at Home
Blending means joining spoken sounds to read a word. Start with a few familiar letter sounds and one short word, such as sat, rather than a long list.
Model a complete example
Put s, a and t from left to right. Say each sound, then reduce the gaps: /s/ /a/ /t/ becomes sat. Slide a finger under the letters to show the direction. Say the whole word naturally at the end.
Keep the sound model consistent
Use the short a in sat. Do not switch to the English letter name “ay” during this example. If you are unsure of a sound, replay the app’s English recording before trying the word together.
Change one thing at a time
When sat feels familiar, change s to m to make mat. The ending stays the same, giving your child something known to work with. Read each word and discuss its meaning; do not turn the exercise into a speed test.
If your child says separate sounds only
Model the join again and let them listen. You can blend aloud while your child points to the letters. Return to matching individual sounds if needed. Repeating an easier task is useful information about where to begin next time.
Finish with understanding
Read Sam sat. Ask who sat, or let your child act it out. A small sentence gives the blended words a purpose. Try Word Builder afterwards, then revisit a word in the Practice Backpack.
